John David Wickham

I am in the process of retiring and not accepting new clients.

I have maintained a solo law practice since graduating from University of Washington Law School and passing the bar in 1996, in Friday Harbor since 2003. My wife, Patti, has been my paralegal and office manager since the beginning. My practice emphasizes all areas of family law including custody, divorce, child support, paternity, restraining and protective orders, guardianship, adoption, dependency, estate planning including wills and powers of attorney, as well as probate.

In 2003, I moved from Olympia to Friday Harbor, and therefore moved my practice here.  Due to the geographical challenges, I only appear in San Juan County courts. Additional work outside the law practice has been to serve as guardian ad litem, representing the best interests of children and incompetent adults and allegedly incompetent adults in court proceedings, as well as serving temporarily as a judicial officer: court commissioner on family and juvenile cases in Thurston County and commissioner or judge on criminal and civil matters in San Juan County. I served as the Chair of the Family Law Section of the Washington State Bar Association.

My wife of 41 years, Patti, and I have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. We try to serve our community in various ways when "off the clock". At this time I volunteer on five different boards and committees. We golf, ski, and hike. Before completing my college degree in night school I worked in retail, construction, warehousing, then for 16 years as a letter carrier.

My experience as a client and as a union representative for letter carriers led me to believe that I could do a better job assisting people with their legal rights than the attorneys I faced or hired. I have spent 26 years working with clients in the manner I would have wanted my attorney to have treated me and my case.
